Outreach and Education
Host Workshops
Holding a workshop is good way to involve the community and community groups. Community groups could be local schools, homeowner's, or even a church group. Talk to the groups about something that is relevant to the golf course such as Integrated Pest Management, your involvement with Audubon, or even about basic turf care that will benefit those homeowner's who attend.
Host Kids Projects
Kid projects or workshops can allow the children to stay busy during the summer months while their parents are at work. They can help to create bird houses and feeders that will benefit the golf course or even their own backyards. The kids would also benefit from nature walks, such as walking around the golf course to different locations and pointing out the wildlife or the different grasses that are located on the golf course. The kids can also help to plant gardens with plants that will benefit the beneficial insect populations in your area, thus helping in your IPM plan.
Inventory Wildlife
As part of the Audubon certification process, they have a requirement for a wildlife inventory, and if one is not present, it must be in the plans for the future. Asking your local garden centres, or bird and animal societies can be a great way to reach out to the community and find out what lives in your area. One idea that myself and Leandro created was an Audubon twitter account for EPGCC which is open to all members for them to post pictures of the various animals, insects, or plants that they may see while golfing.
Informing the Membership
As mentioned in the previous description, a good way to reach out to your membership about what is going on in regards to Audubon is to use social media as pretty much everyone has a smartphone or other electronic devices similar. This can spread quickly to the public and even the province as social media is very quick to get around. It will not only inform your members, but also promote your golf course as being Environmentally friendly.
